That Time I Slept Through Another Royal Baby Announcement

Dahhh!! Was Inundated with calls and tweets galore on this fine Monday morning as news broke that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant with her second child.

Clarence House made the announcement today, since Her Royal Highness was to accompany Prince William to open the Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre.  The palace took a similar approach when Kate was pregnant with George in December 2012.  Coincidentally, the couple’s engagement calendar was booked solid then as well.

Once again, Kate is suffering from severe morning sickness (the clinical term for it is hyperemesis gravidarum).  As with her last pregnancy, doctors will most likely monitor the Duchess, and hopefully she’ll not have to be admitted to hospital.  Back in 2012, Her Royal Highness spent a few nights at King Edward VII hospital because her symptoms (severe nausea, loss of electrolytes, vomiting) got so bad.

“The couple only found out very recently.  The Duchess has not even reached the crucial 12-week stage,” a palace source told the Daily Mail.  “But when it became apparent that she was not well enough to join the Duke on a joint engagement in Oxford today and that the number of forthcoming engagements could be affected, the Duke and Duchess have taken the difficult decision to be fully open about the pregnancy.”

Last time (I’m going to reminisce a lot during these next nine months so brace yourselves), Kate tried to distract everyone from an impending pregnancy announcement by getting a fringe, which went over like a lead balloon and had people asking why she did it.

This time, she’s likely prepared for it all, and will probably be back on the engagement circuit looking like this six weeks after the birth:

Kensington Palace’s full statement on the royal birth:

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their second child.

The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.

As with her first pregnancy, The Duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Her Royal Highness will no longer accompany The Duke of Cambridge on their planned engagement in Oxford today. The Duchess of Cambridge is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palace.

Congrats, Your Royal Highnesses.  You two makes really cute kids.
