Bless 2015, for it could very well bring us the one thing we resolved to wish for.
British comedienne Jennifer Saunders, she of Absolutely Fabulous and Viva Forever fame (ignore the latter’s scathing reviews) has finished a first draft for the movie version of Ab Fab, the hugely successful BBC comedy that premiered in 1992 and came back for a few anniversary episodes in 2012.
“I’ve finished the first draft. I’m feeling euphoric,” Sauders told the Daily Mirror (via the Telegraph). “My proper new year’s resolution is to do the film, otherwise it’ll be a pointless year of procrastination.”
The working title is Edina and Patsy, based on Ab Fab‘s two main characters (Saunders played Edina Monsoon and Joanna Lumley played Patsy Stone). Saphie (Julie Sawalha) and Mrs. Monsoon (June Whitfield) are set to reprise their roles.
The sitcom has had several big-name guest stars over the years, including Twiggy, Emma Bunton, Minnie Driver, Richard E Grant and Celia Imrie (“just stir it, Una!”), all of whom Saunders hopes will make an appearance in the film.
Saunders, a breast cancer survivor, realizes the big undertaking, and prays to Lacroix that it doesn’t go ass-up. “It’s like the second album syndrome,” Saunders admitted. “Once you’ve had a bit of success, the last thing you want to do is go and make a flop. So the biggest fear in me is that it won’t be good enough.”
There’s no word yet on Lumley’s part in the movie, but Saunders should scrap the whole thing if she and her bouffant don’t sign on.
