As expected, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released the name of their 8 lb., 3 oz. daughter, born on May 2nd at 8:34am BST.

Kensington Palace released the name first via email to members of the media, followed by a tweet from their official account.

Charlotte’s middle names honor her paternal great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the II, and,  more poignantly, her late paternal grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Diana’s younger brother, Charles Spencer, sent out a congratulatory tweet to his nephew and Catherine:

The name Charlotte has a few origins. One, it’s Pippa Middleton‘s middle name.  Two, Queen Charlotte was married to King George III, who bought Buckingham Palace (originally named Buckingham House) for his wife.  Charlotte hailed from Germany, was a keen botanist, founded orphanages and promoted women’s education.

The Daily Mirror speculates that Charlotte was given the feminine name of “Charles” in honor of her grandfather, the Prince of Wales.

Today, a 41 Gun Salute welcomed the new princess in Hyde Park, as did a 62 Gun Salute at the Tower of London.

I think they did an excellent job with the name. I wasn’t too fond of George when I first heard it but it’s grown on me. I didn’t think they would use Diana but I’m glad they did. =) Now I can pretend she’s named after me!
