The Duchess of Cambridge is being an outfit repeater this week, and I quite like it.

We first saw Catherine in this darling cream coat with ruffle detail when Prince George was christened at St. James’s Palace in October 2013 (see pic above.  He looks thrilled.).

Today, Her Royal Highness and the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice joined Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip for a garden party at Buckingham Palace, her fourth since joining the royal family in 2011.

Hurrah!  I love it when one my favorite Duchess looks make another appearance.

As patron of the 1851 Trust, the Duchess of Cambridge launched two sailing projects in Portsmouth, England, and opened the “Tech Deck” education center at Land Rover BAR.

Because her athletic prowess is as strong as her button game, Catherine suited up for a spin on the open seas with Sir Ben Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR team as they ran a training circuit ahead of the 2017 America’s Cup.

The Duchess was steering the boat for about half of the session and I think the guys were all really impressed with how well she had sailed,” Sir Ben told reporters afterwards, according to the Daily MailContinue reading

It was the Duchess of Cambridge’s wish that any details pertaining to her gown would be a surprise until her and Prince William’s wedding day.

Media outlets immediately started to speculate on who landed the job.  Bruce Oldfield?  Diana’s wedding dress designers, David and Elizabeth Emanuel?  Temperley London?

In March, it leaked that Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen had been tapped to create Catherine’s wedding gown.

Burton had taken over as creative director for the house after McQueen passed away in February 2010.

On the eve of the royal wedding, a woman wearing jeans, flats and a fur-hooded parka snuck into The Goring Hotel, where the Middletons were staying.  Continue reading

I remember the first time I laid eyes on it.

The date: June 11th, 2011.

The Occasion: Trooping of the Colour, the official celebrations of the monarch’s birthday.

Ah, what a site to behold.  The cinching at the waist, the tiered skirt…it was a coat I shall always covet.

It was a busy month for the new Duchess of Cambridge.  On June 4th, she attended the Epsom Derby.  Six days later, she was the center of attention in a Jenny Packham sequined gown at the ARK Gala in London.

The following day, Catherine would wear another piece by the designer who dressed her for her wedding to Prince William on April 29th, 2011.  The setting this time was a bit less formal, but the temperature in London called for a coat.  Continue reading

While I’m disappointed not to see a fallopian-tube-toilet-seat hat, I have to hand it to Princess Beatrice for bringing her A-Game to the exhibit opening of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Victoria & Albert museum tonight.

McQueen passed away in February 2011, though his legacy is carried on and honored through the work of his successor, Sarah Burton, a favorite of Duchess of Cambridge.  Continue reading

The Definitive Ranking of Kate Middleton’s Coats

Best Coats Worn by Kate Middleton

[Splash News, i-Images]

Few things in this world give me hope more than the Duchess of Cambridge‘s coats, save for babies, good deeds, puppies and the kindness of strangers.

Back to the coats.

I first got a whiff of her penchant for an impeccably tailored bit of magic in June 2011, when Catherine visited Victoria Barracks wearing a navy Alexander McQueen coat.  It fit her lithe body like a glove and commanded attention despite its subtle design.

Things just escalated from there, to the point where I would clap if she wore my favorite coat more than once (@WhatKateWore and @JanetNorCal pick up what I’m throwing down, re: #1)

Ranking my favorite coats was a challenge, and it’s difficult not to go back and rearrange my decisions.  There are those that didn’t make the cut, which will spark a lively debate on whether or not I am fit to speak about such things.

Never mind all that.  Let’s fight over coats. Continue reading

Best of 2014: Kate Middleton’s Hats

We Americans are missing out on the hat game.  Since she started dating Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge has done a bang-up job of wearing the most delightful headwear to weddings and daytime engagements (Eug and Bea, take note).

One doubts that the potato chip hat worn to Zara Phillips‘ July 2011 wedding can be beat, but 2014 saw a bunch of new millinery designs that one approves of.  Continue reading
