In 1996, the Princess of Wales joined her friend, fellow Brit and Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Liz Tilberis at the Met Costume Institute Gala honoring Christian Dior, of which Tilberis served the co-chair.

Diana wore a midnight blue dress from creative director John Galliano’s first collection with the house, paired with  blue “double cluster” drop sapphire earrings surrounded by diamonds, according to Diana’s Jewels, as well as a matching choker. Continue reading

Today, before they returned home to Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge payed tribute to the late Princess of Wales in Agra, India.

In February 1992, Diana had taken a solo picture on the same bench William and Catherine sat on today.  Just months later, she and Prince Charles would announce their separation.

Many were saddened by the photo, as the Taj Mahal is a symbol of love and with Diana taking the photo alone (Charles attended a meeting instead), the press was hungry for a soundbite.

When one member of the press asked what Diana thought of her experience, her reply was telling.

“It was a healing experience…very healing,” she answered.

“What do you mean exactly?” the reporter press on.

“Work it out for yourself,” she said.

Today, the experience for her oldest son and his wife was a completely different one.  Continue reading

Everyone remembers where they were when it happened.

On August 31st, 1997, the Princess of Wales was killed when the car she was driven in crashed into a pole in Paris’ Pont de l’Alma tunnel.

No one could believe it, and everyone’s hearts broke for Diana’s two boys, Princes William and Harry.

Raf Sanchez, Middle East correspondant for the Telegraph, shared just-published transcripts of the exchange between then-US President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair after news broke.  Continue reading

I’ll admit to buying a knock-off of THE engagement ring.

The one with the 12-carat Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds set in 18-carat white gold.

The late Princess of Wales selected the ring – made by Garrard – from a tray of jewels when Prince Charles proposed in 1981.

The Wales boys kept the ring, among other pieces, after their mother’s death in 1997, and William chose to give it to his fiance, Catherine Middleton in October 2010.  Continue reading

I asked royal commentator and former resident of Kensington Palace, Victoria Arbiter to give her thoughts on the newest Cambridge’s name, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

“William and Kate’s decision to name their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana has largely been met with worldwide praise,” Arbiter told me via email.  “With a long royal history it is a traditional name that offers the continuity the monarchy is famed for, while also paying tribute to both families.  Charlotte, the feminization of Charles, is also Pippa Middleton‘s middle name.”

Historical references: “George III was married to a Charlotte. They met on their wedding day and enjoyed a very happy marriage, complete with 15 children. George III bought Buckingham House for his wife, which, today, is the site of Buckingham Palace.  Queen Charlotte is the monarchy’s longest serving consort after Prince Philip.” Continue reading

As any firstborn can tell you, the arrival of a sister or brother is….fine.  My sister was born a little over two years after me, and I vaguely remember wearing a blue peacoat as I visited the new addition.  I think I remember wailing as my mother waved to me from her hospital window, wondering why the hell she had to stay there when I had to be taken care of.

Since then, we welcomed another sister, and by that point I was more interested in swimming and tic tacs than seeing a newborn (neither will read this post, and if they do, I REGRET NOTHING).

At 4:20pm on September 24th, 1984, a six-pound, 14-oz Prince Harry was born inside St. Mary’s Lindo wing, the same place as his cousins, older brother and future nephew. Continue reading

London-based Dave Benett has been photographing celebrities and royalty since the eighties.  While he  initially stuck to news and sports when he started his career in the 1970s, Benett moved on to the highly entertaining world of the London party scene.

Benett told HELLO! that reps laid out the ground rules before giving him the go-head to snap their clients.  “They said, ‘You have eight seconds to photograph them’, and that’s what we did. And they’re giggling and laughing and having a great time.”

His secret?  Continue reading
