Dr. Anna Whitelock is a professor of early modern history at Royal Holloway University (where yours truly studied abroad), as well as the director of The London Centre for Public History.  Having predicted that the British monarchy will be O-V-E-R by 2030, she has earned the “bearer of bad news” title for Monday, April 4th.

“All of those questions about ‘What the hell do we want this kind of unelected family (for)? What does that represent in Britain today?” Dr. Whitelock asked in a Youtube video, according to the Daily Express.

“All these profound questions have been held in check because of the Queen.”

The historian emphasized the public’s affection for Her Majesty, who has ruled since February 6th, 1952.  There’s no question that the monarchy is stable so long as she is rules, but what will become of the House of Windsor when Prince Charles ascends to the throne?  Continue reading

Back in 2012, it was widely reported that the Duchess of Cambridge was into making jams and giving them out as gifts.

In fact, royal reporter Katie Nicholl specified that Catherine “started making homemade pots of fruit jam” while William worked as a search-and-rescue pilot for the RAF in Wales.

“She gave strawberry jam and plum preserves out as Christmas presents” in 2011, Nicholls reported.

Catherine more or less confirmed this during a teaser for the upcoming ITV documentary, The Queen at 90.

In her first interview since becoming engaged to Prince William in November 2010, Catherine spoke of gifting Her Majesty during the holidays.

The royal family adheres to the German tradition of opening gifts on Christmas eve; expensive presents are discouraged, while small trinkets and gag gifts are encouraged.  Continue reading

In fact, they got approval this past summer to build a tennis court on the grounds of Anmer Hall.

That evening, Rickman was joined by other greats including Helen Mirren, Angela Lansbury and Stephen Fry.  Continue reading

It’s customary for anyone who respects the crown to curtsy or bow to the Queen.  For the royals, it’s a form of protocol that is as natural as a hug.

In fact, whenever the Queen’s family greets her, it’s with a kiss on each cheek, followed by a short curtsy or bow of the head.

This, Majesty managing editor Joe Little tells People‘s Simon Perry, only happens the first time a royal sees Her Majesty at an event.

Such was the case for the Duchess of Cambridge on Sunday, when she and Prince William attended the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign at Sandringham.  Continue reading

Today, the Queen and Prince Philip led a service at the Sandringham War Memorial to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign, which was led by Winston Churchill and considered a failed battle during the Great War.

Prior to this, the royal family was joined by the Duchess of Cambridge’s family – Carole, Michael, James and Pippa Middleton, who likely spent yesterday celebrating Catherine’s birthday at Anmer Hall.

Family portraits including Princess Charlotte’s christening and Prince Charles’ wedding photo are on display in the background as Her Majesty spoke of the year that has past, and what lies ahead.

Today marks Remembrance Sunday, a tradition in the UK and around the Commonwealth “to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.”

The Queen is joined by members of the royal family at Whitehall in London, where she lays a wreath of poppies at the foot of the Cenotaph, an “empty tomb” to honor soldiers whose remains did not make it back home.

The ceremony includes two minutes of silence and the “Last Post,” as well as a veteran march past the Centoaph to honor fallen soldiers.

Today, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands took part in the ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the British liberation of Holland.    Continue reading
