It comes as no surprise to anyone who likes color, well-cut fabric, puppies and sunshine that Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is part of Vanity Fair‘s 2016 International Best-Dressed List.

The Argentina native married Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands,  heir to the Dutch throne, in 2002, and the couple have three girls together.

Nearly every photo of Maxima captures her at her absolute best.  She’s always smiling, always waving as if to make sure royal fans in the back of the crowd can see her, and always looks absolutely smashing.

Just because William and Catherine sat this round out doesn’t mean that other royals were going to watch the Summer Games from the comfort of their homes.

Queen Maxima packed up her chicest summer pieces, as well as orange pants for her husband, and brought her family to her native South America (Her Majesty originally hails from Argentina).

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia supported the Swedish national team, Prince Albert cheered on Monaco, Prince Frederick did the same with Denmark, as did Princess Anne for Great Britain.

What was most pleasant to see was how relaxed the royals looked sitting in the grandstands watching events.    Continue reading

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is, for me, right up there with the Duchess of Cambridge and Crown Princess Mary.

Yes, all three women have that crucial “commoner” thing in common, but aside from that, Maxima always looks happy to see everyone, be they a small child thrusting flowers in Her Majesty’s face, or a bellhop greeting her at a German hotel.

Today, the Buenos Aires-born consort turns 45, three years after becoming Queen alongside the Netherlands’ monarch and her husband, King Willem-Alexander.

Today marks Remembrance Sunday, a tradition in the UK and around the Commonwealth “to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.”

The Queen is joined by members of the royal family at Whitehall in London, where she lays a wreath of poppies at the foot of the Cenotaph, an “empty tomb” to honor soldiers whose remains did not make it back home.

The ceremony includes two minutes of silence and the “Last Post,” as well as a veteran march past the Centoaph to honor fallen soldiers.

Today, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands took part in the ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the British liberation of Holland.    Continue reading

As King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands wrap up their official visit to North America, let us learn more about their great nation through the wonder of jewelry.

Queen Maxima was born in Argentina and met the king during the 1999 Seville Spring Fair in Spain.  His Majesty, who was inaugurated in April 2013 when his mother, the now-Princess Beatrix, abdicated in his favor.  Willem-Alexander only introduced himself as “Alexander” at the time, Maxima recalled in an interview, and didn’t reveal his background until they had been dating for a bit.

The couple married in 2002, and  have three daughters.

Like the appeal of a piece of string to a cat, a sparkling object has the power to capture my attention for hours on end.  Add in a bit of history and you’ll see me only when I emerge for mozzarella sticks and Pellegrino.

Because of this, I asked The Court Jewellers Ella Kay to select four royal tiaras to talk about.   Now only is she a bauble genius, but she acted as one of the sparkle consultants for The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Continue reading
